TL DR: I didn't understand objects and arrays in Lua, Codecademy's Javascript course made me understand. Use Codecademy and copy/paste everything you don't understand and I'll do my best to answer. So Codecademy is my recommendation, otherwise if you have some weekends to spend you actually could learn Lua and basic game developement (I'd tell you the tutorial) but I don't think you need to. Wow! I finally understood objects and arrays! I also understood for and while loops! Also now I understand for in ipairs and in pairs and yeah! Now I started learning Javascript on Codecademy. My brain fried and I took a 6 months break not touching Lua. yeah? How do you make the bullets move in the right direction? Now how do you make every single thing (bullet, wall, square) in the map collide with other objects, the player. I basically quit because I didn't understand arrays, objects, how to do object collisions (how do you make 2 squares collide? Great. I couldn't have made it by myself if I tried afterwards. One series was good, however it wasn't a course, it was a tutorial. So no good course, just the Lua book that is free (it's not a book, it's a documentation). There aren't a lot of tutorials (Codecademy doesn't teach Lua for example) and knew basically nothing about programming, not even HTML. I tried (succeeded?) in learning Lua/Love2D/CoronaSDK before for game developement before learning Javascript.
